Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a misunderstood ally of website marketing. To be most effective, SEO must address content value, keyword rich content, keyword density, Adwords optimization and Social Media linking.
With up to a million other sites addressing the same products or information, it is a slow, steady process to have your SEO outperform theirs. Keep in mind that thousands of competitors are using all the same tactics to outperform you.
You will often see promises that with a one-time fee they will move you to the first page of Google search. In the industry, we call that “black hat” SEO. Black Hat SEO is at best temporary, and only interferes with legitimate positions for a very short time. The downside to hiring a Black Hat artist is that when Google discovers the ruse, the will sandbox your site, sometimes permanently.
Google’s mission is to provide the most relative content to the search string a user inputs. The better they do this, the more users trust them to find what they are looking for. To do this, Google scans your content to check subject relativity and keyword density, then Google checks link-backs to your site and your site's popularity (hits to the site). The more top tier linkbacks, and the more hits daily, along with targeted content, the better the ranking. Seems like a cat chasing it’s tail, doesn’t it? In many ways it is – you have to make your site popular for Google to make it more popular.
